The Politics of Identity:
South African Apartheid-Era Censorship and Its Effects on Dissident Fiction
My MA thesis took an interdisciplinary postcolonial-genre approach to exploring the English-language fiction of three South African dissident authors: Nadine Gordimer, Alex La Guma, and J.M. Coetzee. The paper investigated the Apartheid government’s censorship system and its effects on these authors’ literary output and political impact.
This paper won first place in the Arizona State University Student Interdisciplinary Research and Creativity Competition.
